Judging Policy and Guidelines

The following is intended to set out the judging policy and guidelines for the Kawartha Carving Competition (KCC) to guide the competition committee, the judging teams and participants.

This information is published, in full, on the KCC website and will be referenced in the annual entry brochure.

Definitions of Terms

Division – Wildfowl (all birds) and General (all non-birds)

Class – Beginner, Novice, Intermediate and Open

SELECTION OF JUDGES

Judges are selected by the competition committee based on their expertise and their independence from the competition committee and any carving club in the Kawartha Lakes region.

JUDGING OF DIVISIONS

Entries are divided into two Divisions; Wildfowl (all birds) and General (all non-birds).

Each Division is judged by a team consisting of two judges, a recorder and a helper, the latter two being supplied by the competition committee.

Because the Beginner Class has only two categories – Birds and General – the first, second and third place winner will be awarded Best of Class ribbons only.

JUDGING CRITERIA

The following criteria, as published on the competition website, will guide the judges:

  1. Presentation – Originality and creativity, artistry and visual impact of the overall carving.
  • Craftsmanship – Carving techniques, execution of detail, texturing, quality of joints, cleanliness of finish.
  • Design – Proper proportions, perspective, balance and form.
  • Surface Finish – Appropriateness and quality of painting and finishing.
  • Likeness of the Specie – Shape, size, colouration and anatomical accuracy.

Judging Procedure

  1. Before judging commences, the judging teams will meet and review the Judging Criteria and the following procedures to ensure understanding and consistency. The competition committee member responsible for judging will conduct the meeting.
  • All Purchase Award entries will be judged by ALL judges regardless of Division. Final rankings will be based on consensus or majority opinion of the judges.
  • A first-place ribbon will be awarded to a single entry in a category.
  • There are two Divisions and consequently Best of Class and Best of Show selections for each Division.
  • The following “Advancement Rules” will apply when selecting and ranking of Best of Class and Best of Show.
  1. First, second and third Best of Class will be selected from all firsts in Category for the Class.

Once the first best of class carving is selected, the carving that was ranked second to that carving will be brought to the table and will compete with the balance of the carvings for the selection of the second best. The runner up to the second best will be brought forward and will compete in the selection of the third best of class.

  • The same approach will occur for selection of Best of Show. All Best of Class winners for the Division will compete for first best of show.

Once the first best of show carving is selected, the carving that was ranked second to that carving will be brought to the table and will compete with the balance of the carvings for the selection of the second best. The runner up to the second best will be brought forward and will compete in the selection of the third best of class.
